Traveling from Chiang Mai in northern Thailand to the tropical paradise of Koh Lipe in the far south might seem like a long journey, but it’s absolutely worth the trip. Whether you’re planning a relaxing beach holiday or heading south for diving adventures, there are a few convenient ways to make the journey. In this guide, we’ll break down the fastest and most affordable routes — including flights, transfers, and ferry connections — so you can get from Chiang Mai to Koh Lipe as smoothly as possible.

By plane

Since Koh Lipe doesn’t have an airport, there are no direct flights from Chiang Mai or anywhere else in Thailand. The best option is to fly from Chiang Mai to Hat Yai Airport, which is the nearest major airport to Koh Lipe.

From Hat Yai, you can take a minivan or taxi to Pak Bara Pier—about a 2-hour drive—where speedboats depart regularly for Koh Lipe. The ferry ride takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours.

While this route requires multiple transfers, it remains one of the quickest ways to get from northern Thailand to Koh Lipe by combining air, land, and sea travel.

By ferry & bus

Since Koh Lipe has no airport, traveling by ferry from Chiang Mai involves a combination of land and sea transfers. The journey typically starts with an overland trip from Chiang Mai to the southern coastal area of Satun Province or Trang, which serve as gateways to Koh Lipe.

Most travelers take a long-distance bus or train from Chiang Mai to Hat Yai or Pak Bara Pier—the main departure point for ferries to Koh Lipe. From Pak Bara Pier, speedboats operate regularly, with the ferry ride taking about 1.5 to 2 hours.

The entire trip by ferry and bus/minivan can take upwards of 12 to 15 hours, depending on connections and waiting times. Although this route requires patience and planning, it offers an affordable way to reach Koh Lipe while experiencing Thailand’s diverse landscapes along the way.

In summary, while there are no direct flights or ferries from Chiang Mai to Koh Lipe, travelers can choose to fly to Hat Yai or Surat Thani and continue by land and ferry to reach the island. Alternatively, longer overland routes combined with ferry transfers via Chumphon or Pak Bara Pier are available. Though bus travel involves longer, less direct routes, the variety of air, land, and sea connections allows travelers to customize their trip according to time, budget, and preferences—leading them ultimately to the stunning beaches and vibrant marine life of Koh Lipe.
